The RYA/ISAF World Sailing Offshore Safety Course provides both racers and cruisers with the essential skills and knowledge to prevent and manage emergencies offshore. This course meets the training requirements for many offshore races and is equally valuable for those undertaking blue water cruises, where immediate assistance may not be available.
To earn the full ISAF World Sailing Offshore Safety Certification, students must complete both this course and the one-day RYA Sea Survival course. We also strongly recommend attending the one-day RYA First Aid course. While not mandatory for the ISAF certification, it is required for a certain number of crew members in some races.
The course meets the training standards set by ISAF Offshore Special Regulations 6.01 for Category 0, 1, and some Category 2 offshore races. The RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety Course combines both theoretical learning and hands-on practical training.
Topics covered include:
Care and Maintenance of Safety Equipment
Storm Sails
Damage Control
Crew Routines
Man Overboard Prevention and Recovery
Providing Assistance to Other Vessels
SAR (Search and Rescue) Organization and Techniques
Practical Fire Safety and Fire Fighting
Distress Alerting and Survivor Location Aids
At Plas Menai, we believe that learning goes beyond sitting in front of a whiteboard. During the course, you'll have the opportunity to practice hands-on skills, including launching flares, using fire extinguishers, setting up a storm jib, and practicing man overboard recovery from the dockside.
